Ophelia and her sisters

Radek Little

A combination of womanhood, water and death. The book of Ophelia and her sister is the result of radek Malého’s several years of professional interest in this motif and its depiction in European literature. “Beautiful Drowned” takes several basic forms: in addition to the multiple artistic processing of the figure of Ophelia itself from Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet, it is a figure of the so-called Unknown of the Seine, to whom he paid tribute to Vítězslav Nezval in his poem. The depicting of both figures is the figures of mermaids, which lure men to ruin. The author sees the peak of the cult of the drowned girl in the poetry of German Expressionism, but it also speaks to the fascination of Czech poets with this motif (e.g. Vladimír Holan or Jan Skácel).
