Mining Widows
Kamila Smooth
Do you know how it feels when your husband doesn’t come home from day to day? Imagine a healthy person going to your work, never coming back, never caressing you, never going to make love, not holding your hand… You can’t say there’s a million men. Yours is one. The book Mining Widows brings authentic authorized stories of mining widows from the oldest to the youngest against the background of historical transformations of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, when mining was once perceived as a showcase of socialism, sometimes as a phenomenon condemned and ridiculed. The book thus tries to uncover the phenomenon of mining in a different light and relativize the many years of clichés attached to it. The publication is published with a forew word by Martin Jemela, a historian of czech workers, and a number of accompanying period materials.
